at five. vindication for a man -- wrongfully convicted in a violent assault and shooting. just minutes ago. he stepped out of jail -- a free man for the first time in nearly seven years. i'm pam moore. haazig madyun has the latest. >> reporter: justice will be served if this sentence is set asidethat is what the judge said in an alameda county court room as he was clearing the way for the dismisal of ronald ross' life sentenceover taken by emotion in the courtroom51- year-old wood's dropped his face into his hands sobbing tears of relief after serving 6-years and ten months for an attempted murder back in 2006 that his mother always maintained her son could not have committed >> "i know my child didn't do this because i know where he was at, he was on my couch drinking beer and wine"

to life. he had been serving that sentence -- again for nearly 7 years -- at san quentin. kron 4 sat down with ronal ross today -- you will see that story in our newscast tonight at eight. >> pam: developing right now. the national park service now warning visitors to beware. thieves are now preying on visitors. as they head out to some of the bay area's most scenic vista points. kron4's terisa estacio shows us where. >> reporter: with it's breath taking views - visitors often pack the parking lot here at battery spencer - but in the last few months, thieves have zeroed in crowds, preying on those simple here to take in the sights. this is kevin cockery with the national park service. >> reporter: what are people doing? among people have been leaving things in plain sight, of value. people get distracted and leave behind valuables.

have to endure this. >> reporter: in the meantime, they add - they hope people will not get spooked by the breakins and stay away, but instead, take precautions with the belongings while enjoying the view. terisa estacio, kron 4 news. >> pam: new tonight -- the san jose woman who once tried to extort money from a wendy's restaurant. by placing a human finger in a bowl of chili -- now facing new charges. this a just released photograph of anna ayala. right now, ayala is accused of lying to police. kron4 's rob fladeboe shows why. >> reporter: badher face mostly hidden behind long black hair, 47-year-old anna ayala looked straight ahead and said nothing as she appeared for an arraignment friday. police say she lied about how her son, 26-year-old guadalupe reyes, who hobbled into the same courtroom on crutches, was shot in the foot outside their alviso home earlier this month. detectives say ayala concoced an elaborate story, in vivid detail,

about two assailants who do not exist, a convicted felon, who admitted to shooting himself. >> ayala spent several years in prison after she and her husband, shown here in court they shot themselves in the ankle. and ultimately, they got locked into a story. weather it is a truth or a lie. eventually, the detectives to be able to pick apart. >> reporter: back in 2005, were convicted of trying extort money from wendy's in a bizarre plot where they bought a severed human finger from a co-worker for $100 dollars and planted it in a bowl of chili. wendy's >> sheet is assaulaccessory to a

felony. and with prior convictions. >> reporter: claims the bad publicity led to $21 million dollars in losses. if convicted, ayala could go back to prison for four years. bail was set at $150-thousand-dollars because she is a flight risk and say prosecutors, has a history of manipulating the system for her own gain. in san jose rob fladeboe. >> catherine: a developing story. oscar pistorius is a free man tonight.at least until his next court hearing in june. the double amputee track star was granted bail in south africa today.despite objections from the prosecution. on the fourth day of a bail hearing. the magistrate talked for two hours before finally announcing his decision. >> "i come to the conclusion that the accused has made a case to be released on bail." you can hear relatives of oscar pistorius reacting happily.

but he remained silent - not showing any emotion. he's accused of shooting his girlfriend to death on valentine's day - claiming he thought she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom. the magistrate today criticized the prosecution at times. its lead investigator has been pulled off the case because of his own legal problems. and the court did 'not' find that the athlete is a flight risk. but he also was critical of pistorius's explanation of how he thought he was shooting a burglar. >> "i have difficulty also in coming to terms with the fact that the accused did not seek to verify who exactly was in the toilet when he could have asked." pistorius gets a long list of restrictions along with his $112,000 bail. he has to turn in all his guns. this was one - found on his bedside table. he can't go back to his

house -- he's staying with relatives. he has to turn in his passport. and he can't drink.a detail that didn't bother his attorney. >> '.oh he doesn't drink.that's not important." >> catherine: an odd detail.today the track athlete's coach says he might try to get him back into training as early as monday.saying it could help him 'clear his mind'. because this is such a huge case. and because the justice system tends to move slowly in south africa. some observers say it could actually be a year or more before there's a verdict. catherine heenan, kron 4. >> developing tonight. we're just 24 hours away from san francisco's chinese new year parade. the parade goes from 5:15 to about 8:00 saturday night. it begins here at market and second streets. the parade heads west on market, then moves onto

>> catherine: and a developing story. a woman who had once been a police partner to christopher dorner is claiming that it's her hunch that led to his arrest. dorner's manifesto included claims of excessive force and brutality within the ranks of the los angeles police force. his claims were denied and he was fired for making false allegations against the sgt. teresa evans. dorner eventually died in a

police stand-off. evans says she suspected dorner -- when news broke of the killing of a couple inshe's taking credit for pointing police in his direction. >> pam: developing right now. a group of san francisco city college students has taken on the adminstration -- and apparently won. kron4's will tran has more on an overnight sit-in protest. >> reporter: this lasted nearly one full day. you can see it the students in the lobby. they have this meeting in place. with the chancellor at the college to go over some of their proposals and their ideas on how to prevent this school to lose its accreditation. or to even be shut down. there needs to be some changes and present those changes at that time. the commission will meet in the month of june it they do not? there could be perhaps

>> emnow for today's market update stocks bounce back after a two-day slide. here are a look at today's closing numbers on wall street. the dow rose 120 points to close and- one. the nasdaq rose 30 points to three-thousand-161. and although the s-and-p 500 posted its firt weekly loss of the year. it still rose 13 points to close at one-thousand-515. citigroup's top guy made 11-and-a-half-million dollars last year. c-e-o michael corbat was also one of the few top executives on wall street to receive a cash bonus. it comes a year after shareholders rejected a 15- million-dollar pay package for citigroup's former c-e- o. the company's chairman says corbat's salary structure "is both competitive and in line with regulatory standards." >> jacqueline: changes until
